Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity: A Contextual Treatment Model

May 1st, 2009 Spring Conference Workshop Description: In the past two decades, Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity (SAC) has received increasing attention in the mental health field. With the rapid growth in availability of pornography via the Internet, the proliferation of pornographic video and adult sex toy stores, and ready accessibility of prostitution and casual sexual contact over the Internet, SAC is becoming more prevalent. This workshop will provide an overview of SAC, and its assessment and treatment from the perspective of Contextual Therapy. Particular emphasis will be placed on: a) childhood sexual abuse as a risk factor for the development of SAC, b) understanding SAC as it relates to other addictive and compulsive patterns of behavior, and c) conceptualizing SAC in the context of gaps in the development of emotional awareness, interpersonal skills and intimacy.
